2023.06.29

According to Korean media reports, market research company Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) predicted that South Korea's panel production capacity share (in terms of shipped area) is expected to fall below 10% this year. In 2020, its market share was 19 percent, but it quickly fell to 14 percent by 2021, 12 percent last year, and will fall 3 percentage points from last year to 9 percent this year.

It is believed that Samsung Display and LG Display shut down their LCD panel business or reduced shipments.

In addition, DSCC forecasts that mainland China's share of panel production capacity will rise from 53% in 2020 to 67% this year, compared with 65% last year. By 2025, China's share of panel production capacity is expected to rise to 70%. South Korea, meanwhile, will fall to 8 percent.

In the OLED field, Korean companies are also facing the situation of being caught up. In the IT panel market, such as TVS, monitors, tablets and other large panels, LCD still occupies an absolute share, while in the smartphone market, which mainly uses OLED, China's market share is rapidly increasing.

According to market researcher Omdia statistics, in the first quarter of this year, the market leader of the small and medium-sized OLED market, Samsung Display (Samsung Display) sales of about 4.68 billion US dollars, down 35.5% from the previous quarter. Samsung Display's market share in that segment fell to 54.7 percent last year. But its market share in the first quarter of 2020 was as high as 80.9%. Boe, China's largest display maker, more than tripled its market share from 6.1 per cent to 19.2 per cent during the period.
