Global tablet computer shipments reached 38.4 million units in the third quarter of 2022, up more than 20 per cent quarter-on-quarter and slightly better than initial expectations, driven by increased orders from Apple Inc, according to the latest data from DIGITIMESResearch.
In the third quarter, the top five global tablet brands were Apple, Samsung, Amazon, Lenovo and Huawei, in order, which together accounted for about 80 percent of global shipments. The new iPad will boost Apple's shipments further in the fourth quarter, up 7 per cent from the previous quarter, lifting its market share to 38.2 per cent and Samsung's to about 22 per cent. Apple and Samsung Electronics together accounted for about 60 per cent of the quarter's sales.
In terms of size, the combined shipment share of tablets 10.x inches and larger increased from 80.6 percent in Q2 to 84.4 percent in Q3. The 10.x inch segment alone accounted for 57.7 percent of all tablet sales in the quarter.
With the majority of newly released tablets and models still in development equipped with 10.95 inch or 11.x inch displays, the share of shipments of tablets 10.x inch or larger is expected to rise to more than 90 percent in the near future, pushing larger displays to become the dominant specification for future tablets.
Thanks to the increase in iPad shipments, Taiwan's ODM vendors will account for 38.9 percent of global shipments in the third quarter and further increase in the fourth quarter.
Despite positive factors such as the launch of the new iPad10 and iPadPro and promotional campaigns by brand manufacturers, DIGITIMES expects global tablet shipments to decline 9% sequentially in Q4 due to shrinking end demand due to inflation, interest rate hikes in mature markets and a weak global economy.
